Astrological generalities

Post by ochiana.work » Thu Apr 13, 2006 10:34 pm

Astrology is defined as the study of heavenly cycles and cosmic events as they are reflected in our earthly environment. And Astrology is as old as measured time. For thousands of years man has recorded the relationships and patterns between the planets and the earth. It is a well-known scientific fact that the gravitational forces of the moon create the rise and fall of tides of the oceans. The Farmers Almanac uses astrology to determine growing cycles and the best time to plant and harvest. From the spawning salmon to the return of the Monarch butterfly, the stars and planets - aspects of Astrology, influence all of these cycles of nature.

True Astrology is a science based on mathematics and astronomy. It tells the story of where the planets, sun and moon were at the exact moment of our birth and how these placements affect our lives. With extreme accuracy, it is able to break down ones personality, strengths, challenges, potential and more, and give an insight as to what lies ahead. Astrology provides an attitude or approach to life that can allow us to maximize or get more out of it. It can help us to see our lives and ourselves in a greater perspective—the "big" picture that we sometimes only get a glimpse of.

Twelve Zodiac Signs

There are twelve signs of the zodiac, namely, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces—also known as sun signs.

These twelve zodiac signs represent conditions or fields of operation, and have no power in themselves. The signs are thought of as areas of action, and the planets are the action. Also, no one sign is better or worse, or more or less evolved than another. They are all different and unique.

The individual signs achieve their prominence in an individual chart because of the planets and the lights (the sun and moon), which lie within them. The attributes held by each sign are due to its rulership. Each sign is ruled by a planet, and some signs have a second or co-ruler. The co-ruler has a definite influence on the particular sign, but not as strong as that of the ruler. Each sign additionally has characteristics derived from its element, its quality and its polarity.

The Four Elements

Fire, earth, water and air are the four elements, and three signs are associated with each element giving rise to the term triplicities. The three fire signs are: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The earth signs are: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The water signs are: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

The Three Qualities

The three qualities are Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. Four signs share a quality. Cardinal signs are Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn. Fixed signs are Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius. Mutable signs are Gemini, Sagittarius, Virgo and Pisces.

Qualities of the Cardinal are:
skillful - beginning, initiating, originating, enterprising, direct and active; unskillful – impatient, dissatisfied, does not finish what it starts, forceful.

Qualities of the Fixed include:
skillful - stabilizing, focused, resolving, constant, determined; unskillful - stubborn, rigid, obsessed, stuck.

Qualities of the Mutable include:
skillful - adaptable, flexible, adjustable, changing, versatile; unskillful - scattered, unfocused, inconsistent, indecisive and unfinishing.

The Polarities
Lastly, the twelve signs are alternately positive and negative, beginning with the first sign, aries, which is positive. These are known as the polarities.

The Patterns
The pattern of elements and qualities in the astrological signs is constant—every third sign has the same element. Every fourth sign has the same quality. So, each of the twelve signs represents a different combination of element and quality. Signs associated with the same elements are in trine with each other (one hundred and twenty-degree angles between them), which is seen as being in harmony with each other. While signs of the same quality are "squared" meaning there is a ninety-degree angle between them. This traditionally has been termed "out of sympathy" with each other.

The Astrological Planets
The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto are the astrological planets. The planets provide the power; the energy and the principles while the signs are the areas, circumstances and conditions through which they operate.

The Astrological Houses
The horoscope's division into twelve segments - the twelve houses - represents the twelve departments of life:

The First House takes it’s meaning for the ascendant and represents the self, the people and their individual behavior. It is linked to Aries.

The Second House represents all financial affairs, desires for stability, constructive talents, financial independence and values. It is linked to Taurus.

The Third House represents travel, communications, trade, the media, the mind, writing, intellectuals, education, ideas, relatives and speech. It is linked to Gemini.

The Fourth House represents home, family, ethnic pride, the land, wealth, the personal and national soul. It is linked to Cancer.

The Fifth House represents self-expression, youth, romance, pleasures, financial speculation, sports, games, children, royalty and nobility. It is linked to Leo.

The Sixth House represents public health, work, service industries, civil and military service, labor unions, employees, charities and welfare. It is linked to Virgo.

The Seventh House rules international relations, politics, war, disputes, legal affairs, marriage, divorce, contracts and public scandal. It is linked to Libra.

The Eighth House rules financial dealings, corporations, taxes, insurance, mortgages, communes, stock markets and debts. It stands for death, rebirth, renewal and the occult. It is linked to Scorpio.

The Ninth House rules foreign affairs, trade, distant travels, higher education, philosophy, the law, the courts, the church and prophecy. It is linked to Sagittarius.

The Tenth House stands for the government, the executive and public life. It is linked to Capricorn.

The Eleventh House represents group cooperation, idealistic associations, government finance, social programs, theater, friends, profitable inventions and hopes for the future. It is linked to Aquarius.

The Twelfth House rules karma, secret enemies, prisons, monasteries, hospitals, spirituality, exile, and the search for self-renewal. It is linked to Pisces.

Astrology is certainly not all things to all people, but it is not the one paragraph about your horoscope on the comic page of the newspaper. It can and should be used as a helpful guide as we live and make decisions about our life's paths.

Astrology is as individualized as person’s fingerprints. 2 different person’s Astrology charts are never the same (twins are close). The Sun is the ego, the Moon are emotions with the Ascendant is character/personality; this is considered an Astrological Signature. The media usually have daily Astrology articles; these are usually from the Sun Signs only, but only represents only 1/3 of a person’s self so are hardly accurate. If they are read in the morning, a person can unconsciously make their day fit what they interpret from the Sun sign; or read at the end of the day, they think what has occurred through the day that would fit what the Sun Sign has said.

Some have used Astrology to decide on the best aspected days to be wedding days.

The Natal chart is what the Planetary positions are at the time of the birth of the person, the Progressions chart is that the Houses remain the same, but the planets move; the planetary aspects change as well.

The Sun goes through every Sign once a year; the Moon goes through every sign once every month.

The Planet Saturn returns to the exact location of the person’s birth in their 29th year, but the ripples affecting the person can start to affect the person before the 29th year and last for a long time after.

Astrology is as old as measured time. Although there are many different approaches to astrology, all astrologers appear united in the idea that there is a connection between the heavens and the Earth -- they share one common space. For centuries there has been a misunderstanding concerning the nature of astrology to the effect that the heavens somehow "influence" events here on Earth. This theory of celestial influence has penetrated into the modern world until today it is the main concept or idea of astrology supported by the public -- the lay astrological audience.

Most professional astrologers do not hold with theories of celestial influence. Instead, the modern astrologer conceives of the heavens and Earth as united, interpenetrating, and sharing a common space and time. The great cosmic or celestial events happening around and beyond the Earth (eclipses, lineups, and so on) are not seen as CAUSING events to occur on Earth, but as great signatures of events ALSO happening here on Earth. In other words, there is no "cause" in the heavens followed by an "effect" here on Earth. Instead, both planetary and earthly events happen simultaneously and are mutually reflective. Neither is the cause of the other; both are the product of the moment, one acted out in the heavens above, the other here on the Earth below.

While astrologers don't feel that heavenly events are the cause of events here on Earth, they do feel that specific heavenly events are enacted here on the Earth too -- at the same moment. In other words, there is only one grand "play." The great drama enacted in the sky is also acted out (in exact detail) here on Earth in the same instant. Another way to say this is that the Earth is part of the cosmos and shares in that cosmic moment. Scientists have been discovering (for example) that sunspots, solar flares, and solar activity have a very definite (and almost immediate) effect here on Earth. Astrologers tend to feel that all major cosmic events such as eclipses are interactive; they represent an activity also taking place within our consciousness and us.

In summary, astrology is a study of heavenly cycles and cosmic events as they are reflected in our earthly environment and vice- versa -- a vast cosmic clock. Astrologers find the cosmic patterns revealed in the rhythmic motions of the planets a great help in shedding light on the seeming helter-skelter of everyday life. Astrologers may have their heads in the heavens, but only to better guide their feet here on Earth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 'the zodiac'?

The zodiac is actually the backdrop to the Sun's apparent pathway through the sky. This pathway is divided into sections that we know as the various zodiac signs. Because the Sun's (apparent) pathway through the heavens is basically constant and can be found at roughly the same spot for the same date in each year, this is how we came to use Sun Signs: the position of the Sun in relation to the backdrop of the zodiac constellations. This system is convenient because the average person doesn't have to have complicated planetary positions worked out to know which constellation affects them personally, the date of birth is all that is needed in most cases. All the other planets follow roughly the same path as the Sun, within the zodiac backdrop.

What is a Rising Sign or Ascendant?

The Rising Sign is literally the zodiac sign that is rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. This is why the time of birth is important, because without it the Rising Sign cannot be calculated.

What does it mean when a planet is in a sign, i.e., Moon in Aries?

As the planets continue their orbit around the Sun, here on earth their pathway seems to follow the Sun. As they do so, like the Sun they have the zodiac signs as a backdrop behind them. So when an astrologer says that the Moon is in Aries or Mercury is in Virgo this simply means that at a particular time that planet had that particular zodiac sign as it's backdrop.

I am born on a cusp, what does this mean?

When a planet is about to move from one zodiac sign to another along the backdrop it is moving on, this is know as being on the cusp, which causes confusion for most people about which Sun Sign they are, they can be 1 for the Sun Sign but have the complements or problems of both signs.

What is a 'house'?

A birth chart looks a bit like a pie cut into 12 slices. Each of these 'slices' is called a 'house' and can represent various aspects of your life and psychological makeup (depending on the type of interpretation being applied to it). For example, some of the interpretations that can be applied to your second house include: earning capacity, self-esteem, values, possessions, 'what I own is what I am', and/or your ability to handle finances.

Why are interpretations by various astrologers so different for the same forecast period?

Just like anybody that you seek advice from, astrologers have different opinions and ways of interpreting the symbolism represented by the planets. The astrologer's training, life experience, and specialization (i.e. medical, psychological, spiritual astrology, etc) will all have an effect on the way interpretations are given. I think that it is important to find an astrologer that you feel rapport with because the more open you are, the more you will gain from a personalized forecast.

My friend and I are the same Sun Sign, why are we so different?

When preparing a personalized chart the position of the all the planets are used in determining the psychological makeup of an individual, along with the Sun. The individual planets move at different speeds and will be at various parts of the zodiac backdrop as time moves on. So even if two people are born on the same date with the Sun in the same position, the other planets won't be in the same position, based on time of birth and location of birth This is important because the position of these other planets will change the interpretation of the birth chart as well as the personalized forecasts. The most important Signs are your Sun Sign, Moon Sign and your Ascendant (or Rising Sign), 3 signs make up your basic character, it is possible to have to have the Signs all be alike and still be very different WHY? Because of the Houses that the Sun Sign and Moon Sign are in will be different.

Your Rising Sign

First let's take a quick look at your ascendant, or rising sign. Astrologers want to know what zodiac sign is rising at birth, since this gives a picture of the way you appear or come across to others

The Lights: The Sun and Moon
At the time of our birth, the planets (through their configurations and relationships) tell us something about how things were when we were born. Each planet points to special qualities within us. Yet, of all the planets, the two most important planets to astrologers are the "lights," the Sun and the Moon. From where we stand here on Earth, the great shining Sun by day and the reflecting Moon at night are our constant companions. They have much to tell us as to where we have been and where we are headed.

The Sun: Your Self and Future

From the Sun comes light, that which draws us into life. The Sun represents all the changes we have not yet taken, that part of us that we have not yet experienced but are headed toward. The Sun represents our identity, or self, in that it is toward these that we are moving and developing. Thus, it also represents that which we will become: older people, authorities -- those we look toward, or up to. Our essence, or future. Teachers, gurus, and older (more experienced) people are represented by the Sun. The Sun is "hot stuff," those further up the road of life experience.
You are always out-front, frank, and even rough at times -- getting to the heart of any subject. On the move, you are a traveler of both the world and the mind -- philosophy and religion. Outgoing, friendly, and well-liked, you may enjoy sports and physical activity. Not petty, you like grand themes and big gestures.

The Moon: The Support System

Here is information about the kind of environment we create around us, our support system. It is not only the surroundings that we set up today, but the Moon also represents our past, the particular history and social background out of which we grew. Aside from our social background, the Moon governs all of the old habits that we have grown beyond. We tend to look down on, or back on, our Moon. It represents those experiences out of which we have come, all those younger souls who are unconscious, or "sub" conscious to our own level. This is why it is said that the Moon is a mystery planet, for it is both our parent and our child: our parent in that out of it we were born, our child in that we can't but respond to others who are now living as we once did.

The Inner Planets: Mercury and Venus

The planets Mercury and Venus have more to do with our internal and personal life than with life outside us. These inner planets are located between the orbit of the Earth and the Sun. We can look to qualities that are inside us. Venus indicates how we appreciate and measure our experience, how we value life. Mercury tells us something about how our mind works, how we think and communicate -- our intrinsic brightness.

Mercury: The Mind and Communication

Mercury is the light in our eyes, the ever-changing consciousness within us that moves from idea to idea. Thus Mercury has always represented thoughts, ideas, and the mental process in general. It governs not only ideas, but communications, too. Communications -- by phone, letter, spoken, or however -- are ruled by Mercury. Also thoughts, connections, phone wires, and everything that connects and conveys -- even conversations.

Venus: Values and Discrimination

Venus rules our values and sense of appreciation. When we appraise or appreciate something, whether that is another person or a new car, this is Venus -- the sense of love and compassion we may feel. By the same token, this planet rules enjoyment too. Whether it is self-appreciation or just plain old decadent self-enjoyment by having a good time, this is Venus. When we go shopping or are on a spending spree, it is Venus that allows us to appreciate and value all the good things of life.

The External Planets: Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn

The major planets outside the Earth's orbit (external to us) are Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These are the planets of the outer world -- life as we find it outside ourselves. Mars tells us something about the drive and energy we have, Jupiter shows us how to best channel that energy, and Saturn decrees what sort of material or territory we will be passing through. Again: Saturn tells us about the territory we will be going through, Jupiter the way or path through it, and Mars what kind of push or drive we can count on to keep going.

Mars: Drive and Emotions

Mars is the planet of emotion and inner motivation or drive. When we search for the meaning of something, life or whatever, it is Mars that urges us on, keeps us searching. Mars also drives us against things, too and sends us into war and combat. The urgency of Mars, the search for meaning, is identical to the need for union, yoga, and marriage. Mars is the planet of union, and marriage is the most common form of yoga. When we have questions about the opposite sex, we are looking at the planet Mars.

Jupiter: Career and Life Path

Jupiter is the planet of success and simple survival, the way we have to solve the problems that confront us. Thus Jupiter has to do with the way in which we can be successful, our vocation. The Hindu word for Jupiter is Guru. Jupiter is the guru and guide, the way we go through life, our life path or vocation. Jupiter is the method each of us has for dealing with the laws of life, our Saturn, or limitations. Jupiter is the light or path. Jupiter provides us with our sense of direction, the path we are on, the way we handle life. It affects how we approach life's problems. It has always been an indicator of how successful we may be, our vocation.

Saturn: Responsibilities

The process of finding out who we are (self-discovery) starts when we come to grips with whatever problems life presents to us and begin to get a handle on them. In other words, if we have not dealt with Saturn, or time (that is, if we don't have some control of time), there is little opportunity for other questions. Saturn rules the laws and limitations of this material world we all live in. Saturn indicates where we are bound to learn, the narrowness that makes our way felt, the walls that make homes possible. Saturn holds us together as much as apart. Saturn is said to be the great teacher, the planet that keeps us from getting carried away in one direction or another. Although it always seeks to limit and determine any thought, word, or action, it also defines and clarifies. Saturn is called the prince of the material world.

The Outer Planets

In the previous sections, we have dealt with planets that we can see with our naked eyes. In general, these planets refer to life as we know and live it and are the so-called historical or classic planets. Beyond these are three planets that are not visible in the sky and which have cycles longer than the average human life span. Since they are beyond Saturn or time, astrologers call them the transpersonal or transcendental planets -- the planets beyond the physical. One of the ways astrologers learn something about our life beyond time (eternal life) is through these three outer planets: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Here we find information on how we discover ourselves (Uranus), how we understand and accept these discoveries (Neptune), and, in time, how we depend and identify with them (Pluto).

Uranus: Breakthroughs & Insights

Our responsibilities can tend to weigh us down, and we each have our particular ways of getting around (or breaking through) the mass of obstructions that tends to congeal around us. The planet that has to do with how we get beyond the difficulties and problems life presents us is Uranus. Here is the way insights come to us, how we discover or come to know and understand ourselves. It has to do with finding new uses for old things, and it rules inventions and sudden insights into our life -- everything that is unusual, eccentric, and out of the ordinary. It is the reverse of the status quo and is always unconventional and heretical. Uranus is, in many ways, the opposite, or undoing of Saturn.

Neptune: Ideals & Imagination

Even the most hard-nosed of us have moments of real understanding, when things are seen as linked together and one piece. We stop getting the idea in little flashes and just get the whole thing. It dawns on us. We each have our own way of letting go, having communion, and (as the poet wrote) letting "the dewdrop slip into the shining sea." These moments and this state of mind are, in fact, the source for all our imagination. There are many ways of seeing through the separateness in the world to the unity behind it.

Pluto: Inner Change and Growth

Pluto is the planet of profound change, starting deep within us and moving toward the surface. It often touches upon the most sensitive psychological areas inside us. Once touched, we have no choice but to change and grow. The most sensitive of experiences, the times of greatest vulnerability, are times of complete identification with an experience, a person, or a thing. We know in these instants that we are looking at our self, what we are. The most personal of experiences is one of complete identification with a person, moment, or idea. Perhaps this is only possible for most of us when we look into our child's eyes, and then only infrequently. Love is not the experience here, but total identification. This is very sensitive stuff. To touch upon this material is to go through deep inner change and transformation -- inner alchemy. Identification and experiencing that life is our own creation and that, in fact, you are I and I am you. This experience breaks us down and humbles. When we touch upon this experience, we cannot but die to what we have been thinking and doing up to now. It reduces us to our most sensitive because -- in a flash -- we see or remember that it all is us, our life.

House Activity and Emphasis

The twelve houses of the horoscope, particularly when a planet occupies them, provide a clue to areas of special activity and use. Here is an analysis of house activity based on planet emphasis:

First House: Appearance, Approach

The first house has to do with how we appear or the way we come across, thus our appearance and personality. This is the essential stuff that bubbles up in us spontaneously and that is obvious to others as our trademark or activity. It is what makes us each so personally different. This house rules our personal self and everything about us that draws a reaction from our surroundings or others.

Second House: Possessions, Reactions

The second house is concerned with how we respond to or field whatever impulses or unique and personal qualities we manifest via our first house. This is how we hold or "have" things (possessions, material goods, money, and the like). The second house always refers to how we secure ourselves, the kind of response we get from life and those around us.

Third House: Inquiries, Communications

The third house is concerned with explorations, investigations, and inquiry and research of all kinds. It also rules connections, communications, wires, tubes -- anything that we can get through with our body, mind, voice, letters, what-have-you. It is here that we explore and search for the limits of our life, whatever we are working with at the moment. A very mental house, concerned with finding, furthering, peering, and all manner of questioning. Traditionally rules short journeys, siblings.

Fourth House: Home, Family, and Security

The fourth house is where we send down roots, find our limits, and generally secure ourselves. It is the end of any searching we might have done in the third house. Here we find or end our search, settle down, and manage to get in possession of the whole situation. This is our home and the base from which we can work, feel, and experience. This is the root of our experience, the core or thick of it.

Fifth House: Expression, Creativity

The fifth house has to do with awareness, emotion (to move out), and expression (to press out). Here there is always a growing sense of self-confidence and even a pride of ownership, since we begin to recognize and own our experience. We know that we have had or are having an experience. All forms of expression and offspring are connected to this house -- children, animals, creative expression, and so on. A sense of direction and ownership takes hold at this point in our experience.

Sixth House: Responsibility, Work, and Health

The sixth house has to do with salvaging and preserving what is good and healthy in our experience. Here we separate the wheat from the chaff. We begin to care for ourselves and our experience and thus health, nutrition. The idea here is that we are able to analyze our experience and have thoughts about what is pure and what is not. The sixth house is an attempt to save the heart of an experience, one that already by that attempt is beginning to pass or not cohere.

Seventh House: Relationships, Other People

The seventh house is the house of partnerships, relationships, social life, and all that carries us beyond our personal self into an awareness of other people, community, and the like. This includes spiritual awakening and the discovery that we are more than just our personality. Here we begin to respond to our personal needs (and those of others) for the first time. We can see what is going on and are committed to it; thus, marriage and yoga, or union, is indicated in this house.

Eighth House: Business Savvy, Elimination

The eighth house, traditionally the house of death, is concerned with getting rid of excess parts of ourselves that we see we no longer need. Thus this house also covers initiation and any activities where we are transforming toward a more integral position, getting to the heart of things. The no-nonsense quality of the eighth house makes it good for business ventures since here we are stripping away the dross to reveal the truth or essence of the subject.

Ninth House: Religions, Philosophy, and Ideas

The ninth house covers long journeys and religion (the longest journey of all). Here is what remains of the purification that takes place in the eighth house -- the seed, or essence, of an entire cycle of experience. Religion comes from a Latin word that means to bind back, and thus refers to all things that last or endure, such as the truth. Essential ideas, philosophy, and all that is the very heart of things belong here.

Tenth House: Practical Vision, Vocation

The 10th house is a house of practical vision and clairvoyance, for here we can see clearly what is. Reputation and career are often connected to this house, since the areas where we can see with greatest clarity are those we most often can put to use to make a living. In summary, this house is where we have real vision and can see to do and work. Planets transiting this house may provide moments of insight and clear-seeing as well.

Eleventh House: Dreams & Visions, Community

The 11th house has to do with putting our visions and dreams to work. We have been on the mountain and had a vision (10th house). Here we take our vows never to forget what we have seen and to work hard to make these dreams into reality. Thus this house has always been connected with altruistic and humanitarian goals and trying to set them in motion. It is the house of friends and community, because when we are powered by a real insight or vision we share with all -- irrespective of differences.

Twelfth House: Sacrifice, Psychology, and Acceptance

The 12th house is about all that we go through in order to make our dreams into reality and manifest them in the world around us. It covers what we are willing to put up with, the sacrifices we will make in order to bring across what is really important. This is connected to prisons, institutions, betrayal, self-undoing, and the like, because it is here that we must choose to take some possible abuse for the sake of the message we are carrying, or blow it all away with a negative reaction.

Conjunction –

Planets are 0° apart. Very dynamic and variable, usually a helpful energy, an intense, concentrated union between the energies of the associated planets that can be either nurturing and easy or stressful and confusing, depending on both the planets involved and the aspects they make to other planets in the Horoscope.

Semi-Sextile –

Planets are 30° apart. Somewhat ambiguous but mostly harmonious aspect, similar to a Sextile, but not as powerful, addresses the ways in which the energies of the adjacent houses complement each other and how each house completes the house that follows it.

Semi-square –

Planets are 45° apart. Somewhat ambiguous but mostly harmonious aspect, similar to a Sextile, but not as powerful, addresses the ways in which the energies of the adjacent houses complement each other and how each house completes the house that follows it.

Sextile –

Planets are 60° apart. Positive, loving linkage of energies, planets are two signs apart and represent activities that support each other but not as powerfully as the trine, easy to foster opportunities and maintain cooperation, create enjoyable, happy, and easy-going rhythms, attitudes, and movements in those areas of your life.

Square –

Planets are 90° apart. Most difficult, often harsh, discordant or destructive, can be either a stepping stone over troubled waters, a foundational stone, a roadblock, or a containment field, areas of your life where you need to make major adjustments and concentrated efforts just to realize minimal gains, indicates challenges, conflicts, obstacles tension, and stress points that ultimately promote self-growth.

Grand Cross (aka Grand Square)

A Grand Cross also called a Grand Square is 4 planets forming a Grand Square in your chart. Each "corner" of the grand square is a planet square of 90° usually between the same quadruplicity, either cardinal, fixed, or mutable. For example, natal Pluto in Leo square Sun in Scorpio square Moon in Aquarius square Gaia (Earth) in Taurus form a Fixed Grand Cross.

T-Square

A T-square is a Grand Cross with one arm missing. Both configurations are very stressful aspects representing difficult energies that need special care and handling. The combination of feeling both continually frustrated at being boxed in with limited options combined with seething anger about the repetitive patterns, eventually fosters both self-growth and staying power.

The T Square

This configuration occurs when Two planets oppose each other and both are squared by a third planet. The T-square is a difficult combination of aspects as it indicates the need to overcome many obstacles, but at the same time, it produces a strong driving ambition to do so. The tension and awareness created by two planets in opposition must be resolved by the planet receiving the double square. This third planet becomes a focal point of much importance in your chart.

If the T square is made up of planets in cardinal signs:

This configuration suggests that you tend to be critical, impersonal, and in many ways dominating. You have a lot of energy and you are constantly looking for ways to spend it. The T-square configuration generates a lot of impatience in your nature and you often make hasty decisions that you may regret later.

If the T square is made up of planets in fixed signs:

You seek structure in your life and it can be hard for you to deal with abstractions, values and ideals. You may need to be more flexible in dealing with people; less determined and rigid. This aspect implies endurance and resistance in the face of adversity, but it can produce inflexibility, which inhibits progress.

If the T square is made up of planets in Mutable signs:

You tend to get emerged in criticism, ideals, and values. You are likely to consider it important to show your individuality and avoid merely following the leader and trend of the times. The easiest course for you may be to try to avoid or ignore difficulties, but such action does nothing to resolve them.

In all cases:

The T-square causes a lot of difficulty in the life but they also spark action and the drive necessary to achieve. Living with the demands of a T-square can be very challenging, but when the energy of this configuration is well-directed by a mature individual, it often leads to significant accomplishments. The T-square is an impetus to success that many famous people have.

Stellium –

A Stellium is a configuration that occurs (when three or more planets) are in the same sign or are in the same house. To be truly significant, a stellium should have four or more planets involved. This places much focus upon the affairs ruled by this house and/or the tendencies shown by the sign involved. Strong will power, self-awareness, and a direct stimulation to action will be shown in these affairs.

Trine –

Planets are 120° apart. Most fortunate, a lot of positive movement between the planetary bodies and energies, a favorable flow of creativity that allows success to come easily into your life, a harmonious avenue of expression that reinforces your natural talents and abilities, enhances the enjoyment of the aspected areas of your life, expansion comes with minimal effort so there is not much impetus for growth.

Grand Trine –

A Grand Trine is 3 planets all forming a Grand Trine in your chart. Each "corner" of the grand trine is a planet trine of 120° usually between the same triplicity, either all Fire, Earth, Air, or Water. For example, natal Sun in Aries trine Venus in Sagittarius trine Pluto in Leo form a Fire Grand Trine. The Grand Trine is an overdose of very comfortable energy, and it is debatable whether it is easy or difficult to deal with since the flow of energies is so unencumbered there is no incentive for the kind of change that facilitates new growth, perfect equilibrium and balance, which in turn, encourages the continual use of innate abilities and talent

Quincunx (aka Inconjunct) –

Planets are 150° apart. Stressful and ambiguous, least predictable of the aspects, a mixed influence, a quantum increase in self-awareness needed to ensure progress and avoid stasis, the amalgam of existing patterns can lead either to a harmonic fusion or the discordant blending of the energies of the involved planets, restrictive adjustments and magnetic reorientations can result in either happiness or sorrow.

Opposition –

Planets are 180° apart. Inharmonious or adverse to goals and ambitions, it is a combative energy creating the feeling of being out-of-balance and can be stressful and frustrating especially in relationship matters. It's function is to expose your internal conflicts, making you aware of them so that you can achieve balance through integration by either cooperating with others or by breaking off relations with them.

Finger of Fate (aka Yod)

The Finger of Fate, indicates special and important life purpose, creates a deep aspiration to attune to your reason for being here and a strong motivational drive to complete your tasks and accomplish your goals.
A Yod occurs when two planets in sextile (60° apart) both form an inconjunct (a 150° angle) with a third planet. The third planet in the inconjunct represents the action point of the Yod; the mid point between the other two planets is the reaction point. The action point of the configuration is sometimes called the "finger of God," and the finger formed by the two inconjuncts points to a place in your chart likely to be very active. The Yod is believed by many astrologers to be a karmic configuration, and it suggests that there is a compulsive "debt" repayment associated with the area of the chart pointed out.

The Grand Cross

The Grand Cross consists of four or more planets spread at intervals of approximately 90°. Thus, a cross or two oppositions is formed in the chart. This configuration generally indicates a person living under continuous stress and facing a seemingly never ending series of challenges. Likewise, the Grand Cross is also representative of the individual is never able to rest until his purpose is actualized. This aspect places your life in a constant state of tension and upheaval.

If the configuration is made up of planets in cardinal signs:

This configuration suggests that you tend to be critical, impersonal, and in many ways dominate. You have a lot of energies and you are constantly looking for ways to spend it. The cardinal cross produces a lot of impatience in your nature and you often make hasty decisions that you may regret later.

If the configuration is made up of planets in fixed signs:

You seek structure in your life and it can be hard for you to deal with abstractions, values and ideals. You may need to be more flexible in dealing with people; less determined and rigid. This aspect implies endurance and resistance in the face of adversity, but it can produce inflexibility, which inhibits progress.

If the configuration is made up of planets in Mutable signs:

You tend to get emerged in criticism, ideals, and values. You should be aware of the importance for you to show your individuality and avoid merely following the leader and trend of the times. The easiest course for you may be to try to avoid or ignore difficulties, but such action does nothing to resolve them.

In all cases:

The Grand Cross is very rare. It characterizes an individual who should be concerned with people and personal or intimate relationships, rather than criticism, ideals, and values. It is hard for you to avoid spilling your energies in diverse and related directions. Many obstacles will interfere with the realization of goals.

The Grand Trine

A Grand Trine occurs when three planets are placed an equal distant apart, approximately 120° from each other. A karmic interpretation of this configuration might be that you have earned some special advantages to be enjoyed in this life. The trines indicate a harmonious flow of energy and potential for creative self-expression. Sometimes, however, the Grand Trine confers too much stability and leads to inertia and a lack of motivation to dynamic action. Frankly, many with Grand Trines do not accomplish as much as they could and should in life, simply because the easy flow of events does not necessarily stimulate to achievement and ambition.

Hi, Since this thread is about astrological generalities, and no reference of Vedic astrology it is being transfered to the Western astrology forums.

It is a very informative material and will be great reading for the right forum.
