MYTH ABOUT HYPNOSIS

The misconception and impression that many people hold is that hypnosis is something magical, mystical and often dangerous. Hypnosis has even been portrayed by some, as a scary form of mind control, where people are made to give up control of themselves. Hypnosis is in fact the complete opposite, as people visit hypnotherapists or utilize self-hypnosis because they want help to gain more control over their lives, not less.

The phenomenon of hypnosis is firstly, and most importantly, a natural state of mind, which means that virtually every person has the natural capacity for response to hypnosis. There is nothing unnatural or supernatural about it. Hypnosis is simply a natural state of physical, mental and emotional relaxation, along with a heightened state of awareness.

MYTH: You will not come out of trance...
At most you will move into a natural sleep and wake up feeling energized and refreshed.

MYTH: Only mentally weak or sick people are hypnotizable...
In fact the opposite is true. The capacity to be hypnotized is a statement of relative mental health.

MYTH: Women are more hypnotizable than men...
In fact, the sexes are the same in their trance capacity.

MYTH: Symptom removal means a new symptom...
In fact, this is not necessarily so. Any number of troubling symptoms, from skin rash to fear of animals, can be successfully treated with the help of hypnosis without the appearance of a substitute symptom. Many symptoms are actually psychological fossils: remnents of earlier emotional times that linger on as habits.

MYTH: Hypnosis is dangerous...
In fact, there is nothing dangerous about hypnosis by itself. If there were, we would certainly know it. We would have to tell ourselves not to slip into another state of consciousness, not to day dream, not to concentrate deeply, not to become totally absorbed in things of compelling interest.

MYTH: The hypnotist must be charismatic, unique or weird...
In fact, a flamboyant or eccentric personality might well disturb the trusting atmosphere that serves to bring out a person's trance talent.

HYPNOSIS SHOULD NOT BE PRACTISED ON..

Hypnosis carries very few risks.
Hypnosis may not be appropriate for individuals with certain medical problems, or who are actively abusing drugs or alcohol, or who are delusional or hallucinating.
For physical problems, such as pain, hypnosis should be used only after the client has first consulted a physician to determine the underlying physical cause and is treating the cause in a medically appropriate way.
Hypnosis is not a substitute for medical care.
If you think you might have one of these situations, please discuss it with your doctor.

RISKS IN HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis is often requested for the purpose of uncovering childhood memories. Sometimes hypnosis will not work in this regard. Talk to your therapist about potential problems with memory recovery. Recovered memories may be distressing or delightful or anything in-between.

On rare occasions, after trance work, you may feel somewhat groggy or disoriented. This feeling usually passes quickly. Your therapist depends on you to tell how you feel afterwards. Your therapist can work together with you to make sure that you are fully alert and energized sufficiently to continue the day's work.

In very rare cases, after an hypnotic session, you may experience mildly disturbing thoughts or feelings. If this happens, discuss them with your therapist in your next session. This may help open the door to important therapeutic discoveries and insights.

MISCONCEPTION ABOUT HYPNOSIS

Some people believe hypnosis is a form of mind control or brainwashing.
It is not. People change their minds and actions for many reasons throughout their lives.
When such change occurs as a result of exposure to specific information, it is because this information has been presented in a persuasive or influential way.
Hypnotherapists utilize communicative methods of persuasion and influence for therapeutic purposes. However, advertisers, marketing personnel, teachers, politicians, lawyers, entertainers, parents, ministers, and others also use communicative methods intended to influence thought or behavior for a variety of other reasons.

There is no "right" way to experience trance. One person may experience it as a deep, heavy, restful feeling, while another may experience it as a light, floating sensation.
Some people hear every word spoken by the hypnotherapist, while others allow their minds to drift into other thoughts.
Some experience vivid imagery, while others do not. Some people remember the suggestions they hear and some do not remember.

Every person's experience of hypnosis is unique.
Hypnosis cannot cause anyone to do something against his or her will or that contradicts his or her values.
You are working with a qualified mental health professional who is trained in hypnotherapy and who is ethically bound to do only those things which are in your best interest.
Your therapist makes only those suggestions that support beneficial outcomes which you have agreed to.
Receptivity is one of the important ingredients for success in hypnosis.
Therefore, you would not be receptive to suggestions that go against your morals or values.

What is a FIRST Hypnosis Session like?

Your hypnosis session is confidential. It is a time for you to use the training of your hypnotist to enable you to make some dramatic changes in your life.

First, you will learn about hypnosis. Most of your first session is educational, you will get to understand how you will be using hypnosis and how your subconscious mind operates. It has been demonstrated that when people know more about hypnosis they tend to do better in the hypnotherapeutic process.

After all your questions about hypnosis have been answered, then and only then will you be guided into a state of hypnotic relaxation, where you will begin the process that will help you to rapidly achieve your desired results. After you emerge from hypnosis, you will spend some time talking about your experience.

HYPNO COACHING

HypnoCoaching is the blending of hypnosis, neuro-linguistic (NLP) techniques and other tools with personal coaching skills to help you achieve more than you ever thought possible – more easily, quickly and effectively than with personal coaching alone.

Author Timothy Gallwey (The Inner Game of Tennis, The Inner Game of Work) coined the formula:

Potential minus Interference = Performance

HypnoCoaching helps you unleash the power of your subconscious mind to eliminate the interference from your life. Change behaviors, manage stress, eliminate fears, increase self confidence, eliminate bad habits and install positive ones, improve your performance at work, in school and sports.

STRATEGY #2 FOR STRESS MANAGEMENT

STEP ASIDE
Imagine yourself walking down a long, straight road. You can see a good distance ahead and you notice a large truck coming straight at you at high speed. What do you do?

Step out of the way! When heading into situations you know might be stressful, take a moment to mentally, or physically, step aside and review your options for dealing with the situation.
