Looking for advice and support...

Post by cforneris77 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 6:57 pm

My boyfriend and I got a puppy last week... Over the weekend,
he was diagnosed with Canine Parvovirus... :smt009

We tried inhome care, but it's failed, so we took him back to the
vet for hospitalization and IV meds and fluids...

Poor little guy is the SWEETEST puppy I've ever had the pleasure
of bonding with, and I feel so bad that he's so sick!! It feels like
one of my own kids is ill, and there is absolutely nothing I can do
to help him... :smt010

He's 13 weeks old, and a large breed puppy, so the vet says that
he's got a good chance of pulling through, but he's lost almost
5 pounds since bringing him home... It's a terrible thing to watch
something waste away before your very eyes... Especially when
he was fine one day - playing, and full of life - and SO SICK the next...

His vet bill has reached $1,000 already, and we're not sure where
it will end up... My boyfriend is telling me to prepare for the worst...

I have been on the fence with asking the breeder to at least help
with the cost of his recovery as Cooper (that's the puppy's name)
got the virus while still in his care, but I'm having a hard time
figuring out how to word my request... I DO feel that he should
be obligated to at least HELP with the cost of Coopers vet bills
as the breeder failed in his responsibilities to vaccinate his puppies
in a timely manner, and the fact that Parvo has a 2 week gestation
period before the onset of symptoms means that Cooper was already
sick when we brought him home... We just didn't know it...

Any advice or direction would be helpful and much appreciated...

Sincerely,
Cory

followup...

Post by cforneris77 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 3:04 am

Just wanted to type a follow-up on how things are since I posted this
"I need a hug" topic... My puppy is making a full recovery! however,
I am a bit concerned still with our financial position as Cooper's vet
bill just about reached $2k... :/

I did contact the breeder about helping with the bills, but he has since
discontinued contact with me... I'm very discouraged, also, to find that
my boyfriend and I have grown a bit distant in the last couple weeks...
The financial straign is hard to ignore...

So I find myself here again needing a hug and some support... This time
for some new chaos in my life... <sigh>

Sincerely,
Cory

The wellbeing of a master will always reflect on his/her pets.Send love to yourself and your doggy. Take some time off to talk to the universe or GOD whichever you believe in everyday. Show your gratitude that your pet is already fine and recovered and playing with you happily each day and that you have already the money to spend. Think it in full love with your heart. I am sure a miracle will occur. From my part I send you and your pet love, healing and thank you. :)

Cory, I would word a letter to the Breeder and send it certified mail advising him of the dates of hospital treatment, your knowledge that Parvo has a 2 week gestation period indicating that he was ill when you purchased him and that you feel the breeder should be liable for the costs of his vet bill. When you made the purchase of the puppy you were paying for a healthy and happy little pup, and had you known that he was ill and going to need thousands in medical care this would probably have altered your decision to purchase him. Tell the Breeder the amount you are willing to settle for and that if you can not reach an agreement then you have no choice but to file a claim against him in civil court, and then he will be liable for the full amount and court costs, which I am certain you would be awarded. You are being more then fair only asking for a portion of the medical costs that have resulted from the breeders improper vaccination of the pup and I would not let the breeder get off scott free.

My dog also has an illness, pretty much since birth. It affects his energy levels considerably especially the medication. He's 7 years old now and doing OK. Gives me hope that he can be happy even in his state..
