Well, recently, ive actually tried the feather, and its working. So far so good!

Spirit that has not educated itself to go into the light, is inclined to remain in the earth atmosphere.  They can influence and/or communicate, also affect things with electricity or running water.  

All of this is spirit that has not progressed.  It is not a place you wish on yourself because there is confusion with the uneducated.  They are not evil or disturbed as such.  But progress is the key to all things in life here and beyond.

The reason to help them find their way to the light is a progressive key.  Angels often work in this realm to aid this progress.
