Jake,
I feel that your preference for the color black may be more psychological than astrological in nature.
Maybe they are almost the same thing.
Black represents the absence of all light, and has frequently in the past been associated with feelings of depression and despair.
However at your age of 16 while it could be saying something about your current state of mind and emotional health, with depression being fairly common during our teenage years, black could equally symbolize your feelings of confusion and conflict in that no man's land between being a child and an adult.
An absence of light in the sense of a lack of experience and perspective on your part, in having to deal/cope with the expectations which your parents and society is placing upon you, to conform to their rules.
Often made significantly worse by the totally unrealistic and unfair expectations which people like the two of us place upon ourselves, to be accepted and liked.
This tendency to be highly self critical does not automatically disappear as soon as you reach the age of 20, 40 or 60. Extra experience and perspective which comes with age can often only achieve so much, and no more.
