In Chinese fortune telling systems, Five Elements are important part of almost all the theories. That are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each of them have their own characteristics alternatively.
From very begining you may not need to know too much what characteristics are for each Element, but you should note that each Chinese Zodiac is belong to one of Five Element.

The chinese culture is nearly as old as the indian culture. In indian horosocpy (jyotish) too there are five elements, and fire, earth and water are included therein too. What sets apart the chinese framework is their inclusion of wood and metal, whereas air and ether (akasha) are the two elements different from their neighbouring culture's framework. The 12 and 10 (5 x 2) framework in the chinese zodiacal progression is fascinating and I am sure there must be a very deep symbolism in that 'beat', musically speaking.

Yes. There are two different analyst logic in between Chinese Horoscopy and Indian Horoscopy. For Indian Horoscopy, there are four elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air while Chinese Zodiac are Earth, Water, Fire, Wood (which also imply Air), Metal.
By the Earth element from Indian Horoscopy, it also has Solid, Hard attributes somethings likes Metal attribute for Chinese system.

Slight correction In Jyotish (Indian tradition) too there are five elements. The fifth one is Akasha or Ether which rules SOUND and the planet associated is Jupiter, mythologically known as the Divine Preceptor. Venus is the Demonic Preceptor.divinerchan wrote:Yes.
