I'd suggest a few tests such as just listening to the conversations without watching the participants so that you know it's not their body language and other nonverbal clues that are "talking" to you. Does this happen during phone conversations?

Is there interest in more mystic competitions in the future? Often mystic pursuits are a very inner goal and I think it lightens the search a little to be able to participate in contests.

An exercise I found helpful some years ago was to contemplate the meanings suggested for some of the major arcana and design a card that symbolized these meanings. If the deck doesn't become more open to you over time that exercise might be of value.

While it is unromantic, I would suggest having someone run a credit check on the individual and also taking him to social functions where people who have known you a long time can weigh in on how genuine he seems.
